THE JEWEL in the crown of the proposed revamp of Rugby's town centre will be the planned high-quality shopping centre in North Street.

If this goes ahead, officials also hope to incorporate a multi-million pound World of Rugby Museum on the ground floor of the three-floor centre.

Although plans are still at a very early stage, planners would like it to host 'quality brands' and an additional car park within the precinct.

Rugby Borough Council is expecting to hear whether the ambitious
project is likely to go ahead later this year or early next year.

On the other side of the road near Gala Bingo, planners also hope to turn the site into more retail units - possibly linking it with the nearby Clock Towers Shopping Centre.

Plans have also been mooted to 'enhance' Little Church Street, Corporation Street and Railway Terrace.

The Chapel Street redevelopment is currently ongoing, with a new Asda store and smaller retail units open by spring 2009.

Plans to pedestrianise the town centre in North Street and Church Street to create a large piazza near the Clock Tower - revealed first by the Advertiser last year - are still being discussed.

Rugby Borough Council Director Ina Davis said: "Rugby is underdeveloped when it comes to shops at the moment. Shopping is not adequate for the current population, let alone the increase of 30,000 we are expecting.

"We hope to promote the North Street shopping centre later this year to see if there is any interest out there from developers."
