This week I went to a presentation to explain the plans for the cattle market site - to be called The Market Quarter from now on.

The brief for the developers, set by Rugby Borough Council, was quite challenging - it seems to have been to provide something for everyone - first home buyers, families, the elderly, the frail, young people, business a convenience store and job creation.

And I have to say, the plan outlined to me certainly ticked all those boxes.

And not only that, but the council has managed to get Barteak and PLK Developers, to add a roundabout at the junction of Mill Road and Boughton Road. I think the developers and their architects, aedas, have done a pretty good job. But I have a suggestion, nay a challenge, for the council - while the prospects for the scheme seem very good, why doesn't the council give it an even better change by negotiating (pay for), the widening of the Mill Road bridge to allow for two-way traffic..?

The opportunity to do this was missed a few years back, but this project, I suggest, poses the opportunity for the council to get it right now.

The town is split in two by the railway and apart from Newbold Road, this is a much used route to and from the town centre and needs to be properly functional, not a bottleneck. Redevelopment will be taking part on the Brownsover and Junction One side, so it will only get busier.

I know the council will say it is one of the rail companies' responsibilities but I don't accept that. The station has been much improved for better use and accessibility, now let's sort it out for motorcar users too - many are actually dropping off for the railway...

But I think this should be a major priority. In all the proposed developments I have not seen anything to deal with this problem. Why is that?
