PANCAKE RACE: Picture special
RECORDS were broken and pancakes were sent flying when the annual fancy dress charity pancake race took place in Rugby town centre on Tuesday.
The highest number of runners for some years raced down Sheep Street to raise funds for Rugby Myton Hospice.
The event, organised by the Rugby Rokeby Lions Club, attracted competitors from a variety of local groups and organisations.
Among them was Advertiser reporter Ken McErlain who turned many heads in a fetching schoolgirl outfit with blonde wig.
For the first time in its 25 year history, the race was jointly won by two runners - Sue Nowill from Rugby Lions and Emma Wilson from the
Hospital of St. Cross.
Sue said: "I knew in the final stages that it would be a close finish but to tie the race for the first ever time feels a bit strange!
"Alan Ince, a member of the Rugby Lions, recently suffered a stroke and has been treated at Myton Hospice, so I ran it for him."
The event managed to raise £1,136 - the highest amount for five years and a sum that is likely to increase in the next few days as sponsorship forms are returned.
Milly Friend won first prize for best costume in her guise as Minny the Minx and Claire Waleczek was given an award for raising the most sponsorship. She totalled £220.
Organiser Terry Byrne, from the Rugby Lions, said: "I would like to thank everybody who took part and who came to watch.
"This is highest turnout of runners for over five years which is a tremendous achievement and long may it continue."
