IN YET another dramatic turnabout, Rugby cancer sufferer Colin Howe has been granted the life-prolonging drug Sutent on the NHS.

But that news has been tinged with sadness following the death of fellow cancer victim and Rugby Advertiser Last Hope Campaign cause, Russ Jones.

Colin, 47, of Gentian Way, will get the drug providing a scan shows that the Sutent he has already paid over £6,000 for, has stopped his kidney cancer from spreading. He will know when he gets the result in early November.

The news means that our Last Hope campaign to raise funds and awareness for Russ and Colin has achieved its aim of getting both men the drug after Warwickshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) initially refused them it.

Colin said: "I feel delighted - there's a real chance I can get what I have been campaigning for for so long.

"I will have to wait again to discover my fate but just to know the PCT have come to their senses is a huge relief."

Courageous Russ Jones, 63, lost his battle against stomach cancer when he passed away at his Brownsover home on Thursday.

After being granted the drug in September, Russ, of Elter Close, was unable to start using it after a scan showed his cancer had become unstable.

His widow Val told the Advertiser that Russ's determination to fight the disease and get Sutent should serve as an inspiration for fellow cancer sufferers.

"Russ was so grateful for the Advertiser's campaign and the support shown by the people of Rugby. Their generosity was overwhelming and kept us going when times were tough," she said.

"Russ was determined to get the drug and persistence paid off. Even though Sutent did not work for him there was no way of knowing that originally. I hope that other Sutent applications will be granted using Russ as an example."

A funeral for Russ will be held at Oakley Wood crematorium in Leamington at 1.30pm on Monday.

The Rugby Advertiser has decided to end our Last Hope campaign following this week's events.

The campaign, set up in June, has raised almost £3,200 which will be split between Val Jones and Colin Howe, as a contribution towards the money both couples have already spent getting supplies of the drug.

We would like to thank everyone who donated to the appeal.

Hi, I believe all of us with Kidney Cancer owe the Rugby Advertiser thanks for raising awareness both of this insidious disease that is so medically neglected and also for raising awareness of the Government's failure to provide the NHS we the voters and tax payers entrusted them with. They have sheltered their incompetence behing a series of QUANGOs like N.I.C.E.: S.M.C.; A.W.M.C.; N.H.S. Trusts and the like that are little more than costly clubs acting to block Clinical management of treatment and introducing Devolved Irresponsibility. It is such good news that Colin & Bill will receive the life enhancing drugs that their Clinicians advocated long ago - that much of the last months of Russ' life were spent worrying that the NHS had cast him aside is surely an action that verges on criminal torture which I am sure Bill & Colin would be willing to attest to having had to fight every inch of the way for their lives, albeit ably assisted by The Advertiser and their MEP Chris Heaton-Harris. That the Government runs OUR health service in this manner whilst handing over £1,800,000 an HOUR to Brussels for our membership of the damaging EU is barbaric. Good Luck to Bill & his wife Cynthia and Colin & his wife Susan who has been so indomitable in her fight for her husband - A fight that is going on the length and breadth of these United Kingdoms and sadly, as with Russ Jones, the battle is often lost or won too late, my condolences to his wife Val & his daughter Cathy. In this instance I hope everyone will join with me in thanking The Rugby Advertiser, its editor and staff for their sterling efforts to raise awareness and provide support. Thank you, Greg L-W. http://www.UrologyCancerResource.com working with patients, carers, politicians & the media to Raise awareness.
