A YOUNG driver suffered critical injuries after being trapped in her car after a head-on crash.

The 19-year-old woman was taken to hospital with serious neck, chest and abdominal injuries and a broken leg.

The 66-year-old man in the other car was taken to hospital with less serious injuries.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to a two vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at around 9.40am yesterday (Sunday, July 20) on the A423 near Princethorpe.

The collision occurred between a grey Ford Mondeo (being driven by the man) and a Toyota Corrola saloon (driven by the woman).

Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Both cars had suffered significant damage.

"A woman was trapped in her car by the steering column.

"Ambulance and fire crews worked together to get her out of the vehicle.

"She was anaesthetised at the scene by the doctor from the air ambulance before she was taken by land ambulance to University Hospital, Coventry and Warwickshire with multiple injuries.

"On her arrival she was said to have life threatening injuries.

"A man from the local area was taken to the same hospital complaining of neck and chest pain; his condition is less serious."

Police are asking for any witnesses to the collision or the manner of driver of either vehicle just before the crash to contact PC 1768 Andrew Horton on 01926 415415.

You can also provide information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
