Plans have just been released to build upto 12 turbines between Yelvertoft, Crick and Lilibourne.

But villagers have already voiced their opposition against the idea, claiming it will blight their landscape and be ineffectual.

This follows separate plans to build six 164-metre wind turbines - described as 'one of the biggest in Britain' - down the road at the village of Watford

And in February last year, Tesco has been given permission to build a 270-foot machine at its site in nearby DIRFT outside Crick.

Although the proposals are at an early stage, Yelvertoft Parish Council has met to discuss the issue - and all seven councillors present objected to the plans.

Your Energy Ltd, the company who has submitted the application, will now hold a series of public consultations with nearby villagers, including a leaflet drop and a open day presentation at Yelvertoft
Village Hall.

Parish Chairman John Platt said the turbines would be built on land to the west of Yelvertoft, between the village and the M1.

He added: "It's a nice open bit of landscape that could soon become just a series of towers. It's something that people here just do not want.

"We also oppose the plans for a variety of technical reasons."

Charlotte Healey, Development Manager for Your Energy, said: "At the moment, our knowledge of the site indicates there is potential for around twelve turbines, but there are many studies to be done over the coming year that will determine whether the site is in fact suitable, and if so, how many turbines it could accommodate.

"We are totally committed to consulting with residents throughout the process, to gauge their views, which will also help us to fine tune things before we make any formal submissions to the planning department at Daventry District Council."

The Government has committed to generating 10 per cent of the UK's electricity needs through renewable sources by 2010, and each region has strict renewable energy objectives to meet by 2010 and beyond.

Onshore and offshore wind power is expected to make a significant contribution to those targets throughout all regions in the UK.

Should the project be built, Your Energy Ltd said it would establish a community fund for the benefit of nearby local communities.
