The news bucks the trend of the economic downfall that is threatening many businesses.
Rugby's Woolworths will close it doors for the final time on Monday (January 5) and childwear specialists Adams in the Clock Towers Shopping Centre faces an uncertain future after going into administration.
But Sainsbury's in Dunchurch Road has this week announced plans to increase the size of its store by 50 per cent.
The proposed 25,000 feet extension will include a new mezzanine floor with a customer restaurant.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury's said: "The proposed store extension will create a number of new full and part-time employment opportunities and Sainsbury's will work with the job centre to ensure local residents fill the majority of the positions."
Additional car parking space will also be provided, as well as more trolley storage and a new cycle and pedestrian route.
Christian Wakelin, Sainsbury's Development Executive, said: "Sainsbury's proposed extension will improve the shopping experience for customers at Rugby.
"The plans will be on display in the store and we hope residents will drop in to submit their views, which will be considered as part of public consultation."
Shoppers can see the plans and leave comments at

The plans, which will soon be handed over for consideration to Rugby Borough Council, will also be available at the store from Tuesday (Jan 6) until Sunday, January 18.
As we previously reported, Tesco in Leicester Road has also announced major expansion plans and Asda is expected to open its doors next year as part of the new Chapel Street redevelopment.
