CANCER sufferers Colin Howe and Bill Tuohy are now hoping to get a life enhancing drug, after a dramatic PCT U-turn last week.

As we exclusively revealed on our website on Friday, the 63-year-old Russ Jones from Elter Close, Brownsover, looks set to get the £3,500 a month drug Sutent free of charge.

Retired headteacher Russ and his wife Val, part of our Last Hope Campaign, had previously started using their life-savings to buy the drug and thought to sell their home and car.

The decision depends on a scan on Russ's stomach which took place yesterday (Wednesday).

If the scan shows that Russ's stomach cancer has stopped spreading, Warwickshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) has offered to fund his remaining treatment. The result won't be known for at least a fortnight.

Speaking before the scan, Russ said: "I feel immensely relieved that the PCT has offered to reverse its decision. I am also extremely proud of my wife Val for fighting my corner and refusing to give up."

Meanwhile, fellow Rugby cancer sufferer Colin Howe had his appeal for Sutent heard by a PCT panel on Tuesday and is awaiting the result. Colin's wife Susan asked Labour Party Deputy Leader Harriet Harman to look into the distribution of Sutent when she visited Rugby last week.

Susan said: "Harriet told me she would be looking into the matter and speaking to Alan Johnson, the Secretary of State for Health.

"We may not know the results of Colin's appeal for weeks, but after speaking to Harriet and hearing Russ's news, it has given us a little bit of hope."

Bill Tuohy, from Wolston, is still waiting to hear whether his sixth application for Sutent has been successful.

He said: "I am delighted for Russ because he really needed the drug. Hopefully, this will open the floodgates."

Our Last Hope Campaign is continuing to raise funds for Colin and Russ in case they are denied Sutent.

Greg L-Www.UrologyCancerResource.com,Chepstow 25/09/2007 02:23:39 Hi, considering howmany people with advanced Kidney Cancer are having their lives both extended and made bearable around the world - Warwickshire PCT's policy of EUthenasia must give great concern to those who fund it. Warwickshire PCT opted to spend money on PR Consultants to handle the media and make their image look good when they realised their shamefull denial of drugs was reaching a wider public. Warwickshire PCT clearly is more concerned about its image than about the patients it is PAID to care for. This has so concerned Chris HEATON-HARRIS MEP that he has raised the matter in The EUropean pretend Parliament and the emasculation of Britain's decision making democratically by the imposition of EU Law on Westminster without meaningfull debate or democracy lies at the root of the Devolved Irresponsibility that gives Warwickshire PCT the POWER to EUthenase patients on the basis of a Post Code Lottery for expediency sake! Baroness Gardner is on record in Hansard (HoL - Oct-2006) Clearly stating that The NHS spends upto £300,000,000 on tattoo removal per annum. How can Warwickshire PCT justify their comment that they refuse to afford Colin Howe's essential, clinically recommended drugs to possibly save his life whilst funding tattoo removal, boob jobs, repair of self inflicted rectal damage of those seeking perverse sexual pleasures, £12,000 a year for Methadone for each layabout criminal junkie atc. Warwickshire PCT's obscene mismanagement of public funds must make those who are residents of Warwickshire ashamed to admit their participation and tollerance of this form of EUthenasia and unlawfull killing, when in North Tyne, Argentina, Malaya, Spain, Italy, France, Germany and America to name but a few Sutent is available for patients with a clinical need. AHAME on Warwickshire PCT - a QUANGO too many! Good Luck Colin and remember the Warm Hands of those who care are held out in support and www.Kidn
