Rugby Junior Foil
Competition
hosted by Harris Sports Centre
Saturday's competition was a new fencing event and attracted 26 entries in all.
In the U12s category, Jordan Hallam, Patrick Smart, Michael Atkinson, Harry Palmer, Matthew Markham, Liam Grant, Kalan Batchelor, and Joe Lambert progressed through to the quarter finals.
Fine performances from Michael Atkinson and Jordan Hallam saw them both go through to the final.
In the final, Michael chose not to attack and with some accurate riposting opened up a 3-0 lead against the favourite, Jordan. However, with a change of tactics, Jordan drew level at 3 all and seemed to have turned the fight around.
Michael continued with his fight plan of not attacking and his patience paid off when with a well executed riposte he took the gold with a 4-3 win.
Kalan Batchelor took the bronze. A remarkable achievement as Kalan has only just recently taken up the sport. Matthew Markham was awarded the medal for best technique.

n In the U16s category, Matthew Cowan, Mitchell Hughes, Heather McLean, Courtney Boxell, Joe Deery, James Saunders, Rebecca Wignall, and Suzie Hambidge got through to the last eight.
James Saunders performed well to reach the final, eliminating the favourite Matthew Cowan on the way. Mitchell Hughes also put in some fine performances and he too reached the final.
In the final James got off to a very good start, and at 7-2 and needing only one more hit to win he must have thought the title was already in the bag.
However, Mitchell's athleticism began to tell, and with a sequence of fast attacks he closed the deficit down to 6-7.
Unfortunately for Mitchell his effort came too late, before he could launch another attack, James kept his composure and produced the hit he required to take the gold medal.
Heather McLean took the bronze and was also awarded the medal for best technique.
