Whilton Mill 7th November 2009 National Schools Karting,
A damp track, but bright and sunny conditions greeted over 150 competitors for the final meeting of the season for the National Schools Karting Association held at Whilton Mill on November 7.
Ben Slater and Jack Wilson from team Ashlawn were among a very strong field for class 15 rotax.

Ben started on P9, whilst Jack was on P3 for the opening race of the day. With a drying track both drivers opted for slick tyres. Jack made a great start and was running with the leaders. Ben made up several places and soon caught the leading pack but settled for a sensible 2nd position at the close of the race behind No 2 ranked driver Dan Dunham from London. Jack finished 4th. Dan has been selected to represent NatSKA in the Formula kartstars British Chapionships next season.

A serious first corner multiple kart pile up saw race 2 stopped. Ben had got tangled up in the mayhem but survived for the restart, but disaster struck on lap 2 when an electrical fault caused by the shunt, ended his race whilst in 2nd place. Dan Dunham won the race whilst Jack struggled with a faulty fuel pump and braking problems.

Ben started on p14 for race 3 and charged very hard to finish 3rd in front of Dan Dunham whilst Jack also had a strong finish. Harry Knightly from Milton Keynes won the race with Harry Heath from Tarporley in 2nd spot

The final race of the day need to settled between Dan Dunham, Formula Kartstars driver Harry Knightley, Harry Heath and Ben who was starting in front of his rivals on P3. A serious crash in the Honda 160 class delayed the meeting and loss of daylight brought the meeting to an end when a young driver was airlifted to hospital with suspected neck injuries, but was fine.

The new season starts in January with Ben moving to senior rotax and will be hoping to combine MSA club meetings with natSKA but would also like to compete in the SUPER 1 National Championships, but funds are tight and would like some help to achieve the next step in his karting ambitions.

Ben and Jack were presented with top sporting awards at the Ashlawn School Sports Award Evening.

Ben and his dad area also training to be Scrutineers under the guidance of the top officials in the country.
