Good win over Warwickians
Rugby Welsh 55
Warwickians 9
Rugby Welsh continued their unbeaten start to the season with an excellent performance in front of a large VPs' crowd at Alwyn Road. Welsh started well with the forwards winning plenty of early possession. This early pressure eventually told when quick ball from the pack allowed James Buckland to send Matt Gray over in the corner.. Welsh used the wind to their advantage in the first half and a scrum against the head allowed Captain Adam Bond to break several tackles and force his way over for a try converted by Darren Wade. Welsh increased their lead after good runs from Phil Tipping and Andy Bayliss then enabled winger Steve Stanton to race over for a converted try. More excellent driviing play from the aggressive Welsh forwards then enabled Buckland to race over from 40 metres for another try. Welsh then added a fifth try when the Welsh half backs combined well to send to send Stanton over for his second try to give the Welsh a 31-0 lead at halftime.
Welsh were playing into a strong wind in the 2nd half and kept the ball in hand for much of the second half. They increased the lead further when a good break from Bond enabled winger Phil Day to make a good break and force his way over for an excellent try. Warwickians started to win some more possession and added a penalty when Welsh were adjudged offside. Welsh made several replacements with South African Greg Shaw impressing on the flank. Welsh increased their lead further when Rich Stanford made a good run from inside the Welsh half and passed inside to Wade to score. Warwickians added two more penalties as Welsh were penalised on several occasions at the break down. From the restart an excellent kick off enabled the impressive Welsh forwards to turn over Warwickians ball and fed wide to Buckland who finished well with Wade adding the conversion.
Welsh can be pleased with their performance which sees them top of Midlands 6 West and will be hoping to build on this next week when they travel to Old Wheats in an important league match.
