Rugby Town Juniors' Kilsby Lane facility held its first Joe Spooner Cup tournament over the Bank Holiday weekend, and despite three teams pulling out on the day, the event was a huge success.
Teams from Coventry, Leicester and of course Rugby played in four groups, with the top two going on to play for the Joe Spooner Cup and the third and fourth placed teams playing for the Plate. This was the first time that this format has been used and proved very popular, with the lower placed teams being able to compete for trophies after their group stages.
Final group positions saw Cov Sphinx Blue and Red, Cov Jag and Coventry Copswood progress to the Cup finals, along with Chaplefield Colts, Rugby Town Juniors, St Andrews and Thurmaston Magpies. Parklands, Rugby Town Boys, Stanton, Chetwynd and Admirals played it out for the Plate, after finishing outside of the top two in their respective groups.
The Plate Finals saw Admirals lose to a strong Parklands side, who in turn however lost to Rugby Town Boys on penalties in the semi-final. Stanton managed to overcome Chetwynd in the other semi-final, again on penalties.
The Plate Final was a close affair but Rugby Town Boys edged ahead and at the final whistle led 2-1 to lift the Plate.
The winners and runners up of each group competed for the main Joe Spooner Cup, with Cov Sphinx Red, Thurmaston Magpies, Cov Sphinx Blue and St Andrews beating Cov Copswood, Chaplefield Colts, Cov Jag and Rugby Town Juniors respectively in the quarter finals. The semi-finals saw Cov Sphinx Red edge past Thurmaston Magpies 5-4 on penalties, but their Blue counterparts lost narrowly to St Andrews 1-0. However, success for the Sphinx Red team in the final was had, with a 2-0 win against St Andrews.
All in all a great day was had, with all the players playing 11-a-side football competitively for the first time. Rugby Town JFC would like to thank all those who took part and helped make the event run smoothly.
