TENNIS: Doubles championship
Rugby LTC Men's and Ladies' doubles 2008.
The Bank Holiday Sunday saw one of the best tournaments yet to be held at the Webb Ellis Road courts. A quality field of 34 players put their skills to the test to try and lift the Rugby LTC's doubles championships.
The highlight of the day was the flawless display by youngsters Chris Hinds and Callum Spencer in their total domination over hot favourites, Graeme Morgan and Charles Turney in the final of the men's doubles. Many spectators claimed this was possibly the best display of tennis at the club for many years as Chris and Callum won 6-1.
Earlier on in the day, during the group stages, Chris and Callum had been beaten 7 games to 4 by Graeme and Charles who went on to win all their matches to top group 1. Group 2 was a very much tighter affair with three pairs winning three matches each.
Brian Heathcote and Martin McNally topped the group by winning 27 games, Peter Brinkley and Marcus Powell were runners-up on 26 games and Martin Hunter and Michael Alexander one game further back in third. In the semi-finals, Graeme and Charles comfortably beat Peter and Marcus 6-0 while Chris and Callum beat Brian and Martin 6-2. In the final of the consolation event, Martin Hunter and Michael Alexander cemented their good showing in the group stages by beating John Victoros and David Danger.
The ladies event was run as one big round-robin of seven pairs with the top two pairs playing out the final. Last year's champions from Napton, Sue Kluth and Jane Warman topped the group by winning all their matches. Meanwhile, Rachael Baker and Charlotte Brayson won a total of five more games than the winners but only came second due to their 6-3 loss to Sue and Jane. The final turned out to be a very close, nervy encounter with all four players struggling to find the winning touch. Eventually, it was Rachael who managed to put in a good solid service game to clinch the spoils by 6 games to 4. The remaining pairs played out a fun 'one prize, one winner' event.
The new format was a 1st to 7 point tie-break with only one serve allowed. The pairing of Natalie Baker and Anna Grime who played very well to take 3rd place in the group, kept their games together well as they defeated youngsters Natalie Victoros and Katy Outhwaite to win the doubles. It was Anna who went on to claim the 'one prize' by defeating Natalie 7-3 in the singles.
Many thanks to all the people who helped in making this one of our best tournaments ever.
