Trout Fishing from Simon Green's column
At Rutland Water both bank and boat anglers are taking fish and achieved a rod average of 3.0 for the week.
Mike Barrett, from Sheffield, took the best fish of the week – a rainbow of 5lb 4oz. Mike fished with Graham Pearson and the pair shared a 10 fish haul last Wednesday. Local angler Rob Edmunds, of South Luffenham, caught eight Rainbows and returned two Browns on Sunday. Rob was boat fishing using a Di3 line with lures. Boat anglers caught well in the main basin (blue pipes area) with fish also being caught in the North Arm in good numbers.
Fish are feeding on daphnia, fry/sticklebacks and buzzers.
Bank anglers caught fish off the peninsula (Carrot Creek/Armley Wood), plus the Normanton bank, with a few fish taken on the Harbour Walls.
Due to popular demand the Pike season at Rutland Water has been extended to the end of November.
Whilst predator fishing at Grafham Water Kevin Sayle of Watford hooked the best Brown of the season at 11lb 1oz – the fish was immediately returned safely to the water unharmed.
Ten boats will remain on the water at Grafham until the end of November. Bank fishing will continue to 31 December. Tackle sale commences Saturday 29 November and continues to Sunday 7 December.
The Best boat areas were Valley Creek, L, H and S buoys, lodge frontage and south end of the Dam and the Best bank areas included South Dam, Plummer Park and G bank.
At Pitsford Water John Drake rudder fished on Saturday and bagged four fish up to 4lb. Anthony Williams guided two beginners on Sunday to help them catch their first ever trout! The couple, from France, had half a day's theory and then fished for an hour from a boat in North Farm Bay, to take three trout.
Bank fishing is providing sport with fish feeding close in on daphnia and corixa. The popular Fur and Feather bank match is on Sunday 23 November. With fish close in to the banks sport looks very promising. The final day for boat fishing at Pitsford is Saturday 22 November. (Bank fishing continues to 31 December).
Bob Church and his boat partner took a 15lb Pike from the boat late on Sunday in Brixworth Bay.
Bank erosion work at Brixworth Bay is taking place at the moment. In the meantime this side of the reservoir is closed until the repairs are completed – provisionally the end of this week. Please call 07885 135453 to check. Boat fishing for pike 1 October to 23 November (with lures & dead sea fish over 18cm)
Brown Trout now out of season. Any Browns caught must be returned to the water alive.
Anglian Water round-up
Trout Fishing
At Rutland Water last week Alan Taylor caught the best Rainbow of the season with an impressive 8lb 3oz fish whilst fishing in the Rutland Challenge, the final boat competition of the year. Alan's fish contributed to the bag he weighed in with boat partner Wayne Windsor with the pair winning first prize in the match with 10 fish weighing 24lb 10oz. Graham Pearson and Rob Edmunds were close behind in second place, weighing in ten fish for 22lb 7oz.
In spite of the recent unsettled weather anglers are catching fish. The middle of the North Arm (Tower) has been a good spot, especially in the flat calm of last Tuesday with fish moving on top all over.
Fry patterns and lures caught most fish but there were hatches of buzzers on the calm days last Tuesday and Thursday with fish moving on top close in between the Lodge and the church.
More fish are moving into the bank all the way along from East Creek down to the dam. Boats are catching in many areas of the reservoir. Anglers are reminded of winter restrictions - no fishing permitted beyond the sailing limits North/south arms. Brown trout are now out of season and any caught must be returned to the water straight away.
Approximately 20 boats will be available to the end of November – please phone for availability.
Just a short report from Grafham water where Trout anglers are enjoying the best fishing in Plummers and Gaynes Cove as well as along the south end of the Dam. Fish are mainly still on minkies or fry patterns. 15 Boats will remain on the water to the end of November.
Pike are mainly coming to jerk baits or dead baits. The best areas for Pike are the north tower as well as the main inlet boils with a few fish coming from the Dam tower.
Some good fish continue to be caught at Pitsford Water. Season ticket holder Steve Ringer took the best Rainbow of the week at 4½lb from the bank on a Pitsford Pea. Steve also had several more fish in the 3-4lb range reflecting the quality of bank fishing at this time of year. Bank anglers are catching on sinking lines and lures with the rudder men doing reasonably well. John Passchier safely returned a brown of 4½lb.
Ravensthorpe Resevoir continues to provide excellent sport to both boat and bank anglers with some quality Rainbows being caught, mainly on lures and sinking lines. Cats whisker, white minkies and black tadpoles are best. Pat Flynn of Northampton took the best Rainbow of the week at 6lb 2oz, this was part of Pat's 22 fish bag on Sunday. Charlie Fitzroy took the biggest bank fish of the week a nice 5lb 8oz Rainbow on a floating fry.
On the pike front Derek Macdonald managed a one eyed Pike of 29lb 9oz on ledgered herring off Hickmans Spinney.
Heavy rainfall coloured the water at Elinor Trout Fishery at the beginning of last week which made the fishing difficult. As the visibility improved to 18" the catches got much better.
Most anglers are catching very close to the margins.
